GoPro has had the corner on the action-camera market for several years now. In a vacuum of competition, the company’s done very well, and to be fair, it’s done a decent job adding features and functionality. But those additions have largely been incremental. So at CES 2016, it wasn’t surprising to several would-be competitors take aim squarely below the GoBelt. One such competitor was EZVIZ. And from the looks of it, the EZVIZ Five action camera and the Five+ may give the current market leader a run for its money.
EZVIZ, isn’t a household name for traditional outdoor-adventure camera fans, but it’s literally a household name in other circles. Best known as a Wi-Fi cloud camera and video surveillance kit manufacturer, EZVIZ came out of nowhere with its unveiling of the EZVIZ Five and Five+ at CES. One in a new lineup of action cameras, the EZVIZ Five combines functionality and affordability into a sweet little package that could very well steal some GoPro followers from the flock.
The EZVIZ Five features the Ambarella A12 chipset, an underlying technology that few action-cam manufacturers have access to. It also has a built-in 2″ touchscreen on the back with 320×240 resolution. A 900mAh battery that offers continuous recording at 4K resolution and 15 frames per second. (The Five+ includes a Sony IMX image sensor with f.2.8/158-degree lens that offers 4K video at 30 FPS, as well as a 1200mAh battery for 90 minutes of continuous recording.) A built-in electronic image stabilizer to kill the tendency to make videos look like old-school shaky-cam footage. A dual-mic for noise reduction. A lens distortion corrector to avoid fish-eye video. In other words, the EZVIZ Five action camera has every damn feature you’d want, including the best pound-for-pound pricing around.
It starts at just $299.99.
Oh, and did I mention it also supports local storage on a 128GB microSD memory card? Compare that to comparable action cams, which only allow 64GB cards, and you’ve got no more excuses to skimp on the 4K recording.
EZVIZ knows it has something special. Just listen to the company’s GM, who spoke with some serious attitude at CES.
“We’re entering the action cam market with the strongest product at the best price,” said Albert Lin, EZVIZ general manager. “We’ve skipped the expensive endorsement sideshow and have put that budget towards making exceptional cameras more affordable to content creators.”
I’m not normally one to buy into hype, but the dude’s got a point. If you haven’t succumbed to the GoPro horde mentality yet, the EZVIZ Five action camera deserves some serious thought. If I’d had the chance to spend more time with one in the field, I might have been able to say it’s destined to kick GoPro down a few notches. For the time being, though, I’ll just say this: Look out, GoPro; there’s a new guy gunning for the top spot. And the EZVIZ Five action camera has a speeds-and-feeds clip brimming with ammo.
