Today Marvel and game developer Square Enix announced a partnership to develop a series of games based on Marvel’s The Avengers. The games will be developed by two studios under Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, which has worked on the past two Tomb Raider titles, and Eidos Montreal which recently worked on Deus Ex: Mankind Devided.
A lot of people in the gaming community are speculating if the new Avengers games will be action games or be more of an RPG style. Others are wondering if these new titles will tie into the current Marvel Cinematic Universe as a way of going further than the films and television shows and tell more stories. Could this also be a way of Marvel introducing more obscure Avengers characters? Square Enix will most likely have more on the project at this year’s E3 in June in Los Angeles.
The news is good for fans of both Square Enix and of Marvel properties, as there truly hasn’t been a huge, multi-character game since the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. If the new game can bring in all of the characters that have ever been an Avenger, the cast for this still-secretive project could be astounding. And the video games aren’t held to the same rights issues as the films are, so Wolverine and members of the Fantastic Four could easily be in this new project alongside Spider-Man and Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America.
Any way you shake this, this is good news for fans both old and new. Are you excited for the new project? Do you think the “Avengers Project” could rival Marvel Ultimate Alliance in size and scope? What would you like to see in this new game and possible series? Let us know in the comments below.
