Star Wars fans were once again given a treat at the D23 Expo on August 16th, where they were given the first cast photo and production details for the upcoming standalone film Star Wars: Rogue One. Director Gareth Edwards told attendees that he wanted Rogue One to be a war movie set in the Star Wars universe about the theft of the plans to the original Death Star that helps set into motion the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The cast is headed by Felicity Jones who is best known for her work in the film The Theory of Everything. Fans of the Netflix series Bloodline will recognize the name Ben Mendelsohn who was nominated for an Emmy for his performance in the Netflix series. Donnie Yen who is best known for his martial arts action films such as Blade II and Ip Man joins the galaxy far far away. A huge name on this list for the cast is Forest Whitaker who has been featured in films like Southpaw and The Last King of Scotland which earned him and Academy Award. Hannibal and Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen is involved in the project along with Firefly’s Alan Tudyk who will be playing a motion capture character.
When asked if Rogue One will tie into the Lucasfilm animated series Star Wars: Rebels, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said they are “aware that Rebels is occurring at the same time.” The story for Rogue One was originally thought up by John Knoll who has been working for Industrial Light and Magic (the studio that does visual effects for Lucasfilm as well as other blockbuster films). Edwards is also bringing on crew members that have worked on films like Zero Dark Thirty, Black Hawk Down and Saving Private Ryan to give the film a war movie feel and a lived in feel.
