WWE’s The Viking Experience Is Over: Tag Team Gets New Name

It took less than a week for the WWE to realize that whoever is creating their characters made a huge misstep. The War Raiders, the NXT tag team champions, came up to Monday Night Raw during last week’s Superstar Shakeup and were given the wholly uninspired team name of The Viking Experience. The internet exploded with jokes and memes about the name, and almost all of it was negative.

Now, ahead of tonight’s Raw, WWE.com is listing Erik and Ivar as “The Viking Raiders,” which is a compromise between the two monikers. Pro Wrestling Insider revealed last week that the War Raiders almost had another name entirely, The Berzerkers, and it is one that would have fit them much better that “The Viking Experience.”

WWE has a history of making some odd choices when it comes to rebranding certain characters. As Electric Bento highlighted recently, some work out, and some do not. Not even Stone Cold Steve Austin was immune to the silliness from Vince McMahon and company.

Erik and Ivar, the superstars who made up The Viking Experience, and who are now apparently called Viking Raiders, were a surprise call up to Raw during the Superstar Shakeup. Their tag championship run in NXT as the War Raiders was still going strong after recently successfully defending the belts at NXT Takeover New York over WrestleMania 35 weekend. They first got the belts at NXT Takeover Phoenix after defeating Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly of the Undisputed Era in a match that opened the show.

We hope that the newly branded Viking Raiders — if that name sticks — will have more success on the main roster than other highly touted teams coming up from NXT. Does anyone remember the Ascension? Seriously, does anyone remember them?
