Adventure is out there and it’s time to go find it in Sony’s new exclusive and launch title for the PlayStation 5, Bugsnax. This fun little game, published by Young Horses, has players exploring Snaktooth Island and helping its people, the Grumpuses, to rebuild the city of Snaxburg and find its missing citizens. Along the way, players get to run across bugsnax, the animal life found on this island. Bugsnax couldn’t get any cuter even if it tried.

First and foremost, this game is available to PlayStation Plus members for free on the Playstation 5 until January, 2021. This is another fantastic way to introduce players to the different aspects of the PlayStation 5. The console has been out for just over a month and has received rave reviews. Suppliers struggled to keep up with the demand of the holiday season of what has been an insane year of 2020. But a cute game for download on a new console is a great way to cheer players up.

The bugs of Bugsnax

Players have the opportunity to catch over 100 different types of bugsnax all across Snaktooth island. They use various traps to catch and categorize each little snax they find. My personal favorite bugsnax is Bunger. A heftier bugsnax, it runs around chasing after anything and everything that is covered in ketchup. It even goes as far as to knock other bugsnax out of the way to meet its goal. Plus, it has a cute deep derpy voice that makes me laugh every time I hear it. Who knew that my favorite food could be the cutest thing in the world?

While exploring Snaktooth Island, players come across other Grumpuses who used to live in the city. They had moved away since their fearless leader had gone missing. The goal of Bugsnax is to bring all of Snaxburg’s residents back home. It’s also about finding their missing leader while categorizing bugsnax and feeding the Grumpuses. When players find each Grumpus out in the wild, small tasks are asked of them before the citizens feel comfortable coming back to Snaxburg.

Catching snax in Bugsnax

Once back in town, the Grumpuses go about their usual business while interacting with each other. Some don’t always get along with each other, while others will be best friends with a Grumpus just to get at their bugsnax collection. It’s a dog eat dog world out there.

Once each Grumpus has returned to Snaxburg, they can be interviewed by the player to try and figure out what information they know about their leader’s disappearance. It’s then up to the player to find the leader and bring lasting peace to Snaxburg.

Exploring Snaktooth Island is an absolute blast. The environments are rich in color and so food oriented that it’s a food lover’s dream. Many plants grow in the wild that players can interact with and even take. This includes a ketchup plant, a chocolate syrup plant, and a ranch dressing plant to name a few. By taking these plants, players can spread ketchup or syrup around various areas to attract different bugsnax and make them easier to catch. Take Bunger again. It LOVES ketchup. So, players can create a line of ketchup on the ground that leads to their trap and lure the Bunger closer until they can catch it.

There are so many creative ways to catch bugsnax and a cute story to go along with the game. While gameplay can seem sort of repetitive after a while, Bugsnax is a wonderful game for young players to test the waters with the PlayStation 5. It is also available on the PlayStation 4.

I’m off to go explore more of Snaktooth Island. What are you going to find when you get here?
