It’s the moment first person shooter fans have been waiting for, because Activision and Infinity Ward have finally revealed the multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Announced earlier this year, the company has been a little more tight-lipped about this year’s release, but it looks like the wait has been worth it, judging by the trailer.
Infinity Ward is looking to redefine what gamers expect from the franchise, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is switching up some things, while modifying others. Players will be able to outfit their operators how they want, with tons of gun and character customizations available in the new Gunsmith system.
There will even be the traditional 6v6 multiplayer modes, alongside the new 2v2 Gunfight mode, modes that support 10v10 battles, and even 20v20 battles. The developers knew the franchise needed to evolve, and it plans to do so with its players. There’s also a new Ground War mode that will support more than 100 players, and for the first time in the franchise Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will support cross-play between platforms.
In addition to a ton of new details being announced, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also had its beta period schedule revealed. Launching first for PlayStation 4, Modern Warfare will be available in an early access period from September 12-13, followed by an open beta from September 12-13 on PS4. There will be another beta to test cross-play functionality with early access from September 19-20 for all platforms, and an open beta on all platforms from September 21-23.
The game looks like a complete overhaul for the franchise, with a reimagining of a fan favorite series featuring a dark, more grounded storyline. Launching October 25th, the titles should be a fine return for some fan favorite characters when players begin sinking some serious time into it.
