In less than 10 days, the critically acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice managed to sell more than 2 million copies across Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
This is the first FromSoftware title to join the Activision portfolio, and it seems to be a hit, both critically and commercially. Rated 90+ across all platforms on Metacritic, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s extreme difficulty is plunging its sword into players’ hearts. Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Activision, Michelle Fonseca, says “The fans have made Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice one of the most incredible game launches of 2019 thus far. The game has performed well on all platforms including PC and we’re excited by the continued support from gamers and critics alike. It has been gratifying to see the enjoyment from fans when they overcome each challenge.”
This was a leap of faith for Activision, who has never worked with FromSoftware before. Though looking at their strong portfolio of titles, it’s no surprise Sekiro is doing well. This is an all new IP from Hidetaka Miyazaka, one that follows Sekiro, the one-armed wolf in his journey to protect Lord Kuro, the divine heir. Players take control of Sekiro as he journeys through a large number of areas taking down brutal enemies both large and small on his adventure.
On launch day, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was even the most viewed game on Twitch, with more than 631 million minutes watched during the launch weekend. Within a week, it was sitting at 1.1 billion minutes seen on Twitch. Those high numbers are driven by high difficulty and streamers trying to beat the game as quickly as possible, or by putting constraints on their character during runs through the game. Check out the launch trailer below, and be sure to play Sekiro for yourself, as one of the highest rated games of the year.
