Square Enix is a publisher that will always hold a special place in my heart. They’ve created a majority of the titles I grew up playing and bonding with friends over. They merged Disney and Final Fantasy franchises to create the magical Kingdom Hearts titles, and now they’re remaking one of the most beloved RPG’s of all time.
Not every announcement from the Square Enix E3 showcase hit home, but there were some really great games shown off. We’ve already looked at the best announcements from the Xbox E3 Briefing, as well as the best announcements from Bethesda’s E3 showcase, so now it’s time to pull the best announcements that Square Enix had during the busiest week for gamers.
5. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Gets The Remaster Treatment
When Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles released for Nintendo Gamecube all the way back in 2004, my friends and I played a ton of it. It released around the same time as The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, and we referred to both of these games as “the friendship test.” The Zelda one probably a little more that Final Fantasy, but they both fit the bill. We had almost as much fun messing with each other than actually playing the game, so seeing a remastered version of Crystal Chronicles on the way from Square Enix is something very personal to me.
No specific release date was set, but it was announced to be coming later this Winter. Players can expect updated visuals, new content and voice acting, and to be able to play locally or online. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles will be launching for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOs, and Android. Check out the new trailer below.
4. The Last Remnant Remastered Out Now For Nintendo Switch
I played The Last Remnant when it came out for Xbox 360 many years ago. I don’t think I was old enough to fully appreciate how deep and rewarding the combat was at the time, so I was pretty enthralled when I played it again a few months ago when The Last Remnant Remastered launched for PlayStation 4. Sure, it’s a bit dated at this point, and the story is pretty great, if not convoluted. However, the combat system is one of the most unique systems to this day for a niche RPG, and even better, it’s available now! Check out the launch trailer for The Last Remnant Remastered for Nintendo Switch below.
3. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Announced For Later This Year
This was one announcement I’ve been waiting on for a while now. I had a feeling it was coming, but I hadn’t heard a single rumor or anything for it, so it had slipped my mind. Until today during Square Enix’s E3 showing. Everyone loves Final Fantasy VII, and don’t get me wrong, it’s an incredible game, but it isn’t my favorite. Hell, even Final Fantasy VIII isn’t my favorite, that award goes to Final Fantasy IX, but it’ll be great to revisit Squall and the gang later this year when Final Fantasy VIII gets remastered for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Check out the new trailer below.
2. Marvel’s Avengers Finally Shown Off
Marvel’s Avengers has been a no-show for Square Enix for a few years now, and fans have been wondering when we’d see more. This one was announced two years ago in 2017 as in development, and Crystal Dynamic has been silent since. Probably because development was focused on Shadow of the Tomb Raider at the time, but now that Lara’s journey is out, focus has been shifted. Marvel’s Avengers showed off Hulk, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, and Captain America doing what they do best, fighting baddies and helping people. The game is an all new storyline with a great voice cast to back it up. Troy Baker is voicing Hulk, while Nolan North is playing Tony Stark.
Better yet, the roster and regions players will get to explore is going to only get bigger over the years as Crystal Dynamic plans to release new characters and regions free of charge. Marvel’s Avengers can be played solo or in online co-op, and promises to delight fans of both the comics and MCU films.
1. Final Fantasy VII Remake Gets Tons Of New Info
The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Final Fantasy VII Remake had a blowout of new info today during the Square Enix E3 presentation. Combat was detailed, and looks to be a mix of something akin to Kingdom Hearts meets turn based combat. Players will be able to hit the square button to attack with Cloud’s sword, and then use ATB gauges to freeze time and execute strategic moves.
Switching through party members seems to be seamless too, and players can expect to control the returning cast of characters with new abilities just for this remake. A lengthy boss battle was shown off, followed by an extended trailer showing combat for Tifa, Cloud, and Barrett, as well as Sephiroth making his first appearance in a trailer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
The release date of March 3, 2019, rolled across the screen followed by the announcement of different versions that will be available. A standard edition that comes with the game and a bonus piece of DLC, the deluxe edition that includes a steelbook and two bonuses pieces of DLC, and a pricey collector’s edition that includes a large PlayArts-Kai for Cloud and his motorcycle, along with everything from the previous versions for a price of $329.99. All three versions are still available for preorder on the Square Enix store, which is the only place to get the highest tier version available.
We’re on the ground at E3 this week, and expecting to see more of several titles here, including Marvel’s Avengers, so stay tuned throughout the week with us for updates and impressions on a lot of titles we’ve been talking about.
