It’s the Season of the Drifter brother, get ready to bang some knuckles! If you like Gambit, that is. Or you aren’t completely burnt out from grinding to get your Dredgen title from last season. Granted it’s different this time around, quite a bit different, and possibly even a bit over complicated. Then there is the story, we actually don’t know what is going on. It’s being delivered in notes and not cutscenes which leaves a lot to the imagination as to what is actually going on. What we know is that it all revolves around The Drifter and his presence in The Last City.
It’s difficult to say anything else about the story since it’s being delivered in pieces and also because of spoilers. I am a shoulder deep into it, and so far it doesn’t make a lot of sense, except that The Drifter is under some heavy scrutiny and an ever watchful eye from The Praxic Order. You will be forced to choose sides this season for the Vanguard or Drifter. Not much has popped up yet regarding your choice besides some dialogue changes and some side specific missions. As interesting as this may sound , it’s been a buggy mess so far and the loot loop is somewhat broken.
There is new armor, which is great right? Well there are four types of armor sets for each class and each set has three tiers. These are all for Gambit Prime. You assign yourself a player role, what you’re good at, such as Collector, Sentry, Invader, and Reaper. These armor sets give bonus perks for each play style and stack for each piece worn. You gain motes of each type through game play and bounties. And will use these as currency when you play Reckoning, which is the endgame version of Gambit. You will get tons of armor from this, most of it will be junk. This goes on and each tier will open on a schedule with Tier 3 now available. Reckoning is best played with a team, it’s no joke. All this new gear is dropping below light level and the bugs have only been giving people a one point increase per high powered engram which has sucked a whole bunch of the fun out of Season of The Drifter from the beginning. This has supposedly been fixed now according to Bungie and their new update has attempted to address a lot of the mess that was going on. This writer personally took a Warlock up 20 light levels yesterday, so it appears engrams are fixed.
There are also new higher tier and masterwork or curated weapons to be had from Crucible, Gambit, and Strikes if you are down for the grind to get them and rumor has it that the SR3 Oxygen Scout from the Vanguard is amazing. The old ones are also still available and drop at higher level. The new weapons for Gambit are equally awesome, but seem to have a low drop rate and of course there are no guarantees on the rolls. After several runs I have only snagged two. One had terrible rolls, but the new pulse rifle is an absolute beast for PvP. Speaking of weapons, we now have a chance to get the almighty Thorn. The legendary hand cannon of Dredgen Yor and one of the weapons of sorrow can be earned via an exotic quest. And it’s long and tedious as you would expect these days. I won’t spoiler it, I’ll just say the difficulty is up there.
Overall it isn’t a bad season, it’s just not what I personally expected. Once again it’s not all out on the table yet and as such there is still quite a bit of mystery and some surprises out there. And there is still tons to do, I repeat: tons. The large amounts of time spent grinding for weapons and gear is what makes up most of the daily “to do list”. It’s mostly endgame content, which means all your cool stuff that was maxed out now sucks and you have to do it again. This season could have really used a raid lair to make it more interesting to add to more choices in the goals of players, but instead we have mystery. Where is Mara? And who is this blue lady exactly? There’s a little teaser for you to get you hyped again.
Season of the Drifter is more a season that questions what is going on next season with the completion of the seasonal pass and what will we see after Activision is out of the picture and Bungie is in full control of their franchise. So pick your side Guardian, who are you fighting for? I’ll be seeing you out there Guardians, keep on fighting. Whatever side you choose.
