These days everyone seems to have a headset and game online. There are so many choices when it comes to a headset alone, the thought of any added peripherals tends to turn many folks away. Pro gamers have always had certain toys to increase performance and when I got my hands on the Elite SuperAmp Pro Performance Gaming Audio Controller from Turtle Beach, I thought it would just be another weapon in the arsonal of the elite, not really for a couch gamer like myself. What I discovered was a product that made my personal life easier AND increased my gameplay ability! Read on to see why you may need an Elite SuperAmp in your life too!
There are two different versions of the Elite SuperAmp, one for Xbox One and one for PlayStation 4. Both are compatible with a PC as well. I am mainly a PlayStation 4 player so that is the model I got. The main difference is that the PS4 version has an optical (TOSLINK) input if you prefer, a long cable for this is provided thankfully.
You may be thinking, “What would I need a long optical cable for?” so let’s get this out of the way, yes, the Elite SuperAmp is not wireless. In a world where everything is going wireless why is Turtle Beach making us use two cables? One is for usb power or if you choose to not use the optical cable, the main input. Well, the reason is this little guy will sit close to you and the bluetooth signal is actually going to connect to your mobile phone for the provided app.The other reason is that, as any pro player will tell you, wired is just more dependable, especially in an environment with 100 other players using headsets. Also, as much as bluetooth technology has gotten better, wired is still the only way you will get optimal audio quality. The seven foot cables provided with the product was more than enough length for my current gaming throne, my couch.
Once everything is plugged in, following the instructions I found it very easy to set up the Elite SuperAmp. While usually sold with the Elite Pro 2 Headset as a set, I opted to use my old Razer Kraken Pro. This is nice for those who may have a favorite, already worn in and comfortable headset, as the SuperAmp audio output will work with any existing headset. Next was downloading and configuring the Turtle Beach Audio Hub app for my iPhone (also available on Android) from the App Store.
Once connected, the Audio Hub app will allow you to really get into the configurations and take advantage of this neat little amp. Use it to set your adjust your volume separating voice chat and game sound. You can adjust the mic monitor, to hear yourself in the headphones if you like and adjust how loud you are. My favorite feature though is the Superhuman Hearing option. When turned on, the SuperAmp will adjust the in game sound to pick up and focus on player movement. At first I did not think this would be any benefit or even work, but I was very wrong and I found it very useful when playing online game maps where enemies like to hide. Now I can actually hear their footsteps and plan accordingly.
Chat Boost will lower game sound when other players speak, handy in a firefight when trying to communicate with your team. The Audio Hub app will also give you easy access to game sound equalizer presets or customize it to your liking. An option for Mic Noise Gate is also available to cause your mic to only work when you speak, avoiding background noise like my dogs barking. You can even use the app to adjust the brightness (or totally disable it) of the LED and colors on the top of the volume knob. I am old school and love knobs so having this easy to find knob right next to me when playing was great when I needed a quick adjustment. I am not a streamer so I did not mess much with the steaming output options, but it was nice to see that option there.
The design of the Elite SuperAmp is superb. It is solid and feels like you could drop it a million times and it would be fine. This heft makes it sit well on a table or even the seat next to you. My absolute favorite aspect of the product though is the ability to take phone calls via your cell while playing. I tend to miss calls from my wife when I am gaming and this device makes for a happy marriage. No more missed important calls!
While the average gamer may not take advantage of many of the sound customization and quality levels of the Elite SuperAmp Pro Performance Gaming Audio Controller, pro gamers will definitely see the advantages. The only thing I would of added is a nice case to store the device and its cables in for traveling to competitions. With an MSRP of $149.95 the SuperAmp is not cheap, but the quality and advantages it brings are well worth it if you can spare the cash. Even average gamers like myself will see the quality of life changes and hear the top audio quality.
The Elite SuperAmp Pro Performance Gaming Audio Controller is available now. This review is based on a PS4 version provided by Turtle Beach.
