‘Pokémon Café Mix’ Review: A Fun Feeding Frenzy

Phone games are a fun distraction at the tip of your fingers and easy to pull up and enjoy for a quick second. And the Pokémon franchise is no stranger to phone games. From puzzle games to the still popular Pokémon GO!, Nintendo has attempted to branch out through mobile titles that coexist with their Switch counterparts. So, what else could Nintendo introduce to the phone to keep the game play fresh?

Nintendo introduced the world to Pokémon Café Mix, a new matching game where the player runs a cafe for Pokémon customers. Eventually, these customers become staff and bring their own talents to create more delicious food and drinks for more Pokémon to come and enjoy. Plus, this game is on both the Nintendo Switch and handheld devices. I downloaded Pokémon Café Mix on my phone and jumped in.

Open for business in 'Pokemon Cafe Mix'

Right off the bat, Pokémon Café Mix reminds me of Pokémon Shuffle, another mobile title available for free download on phones and the Nintendo 3DS. Pokémon Café Mix is about connecting Pokémon faces together. The more faces connected, the more bonuses the players get to hit a certain score. Pokémon Café Mix is a more fluid version of popular mobile games like Candy Crush. But it’s not only about getting a high score. There are obstacles in the playing field like hazelnuts, honey, tomatoes, and whipped cream to work around.

Regular updates keep 'Pokemon Cafe Mix' fun and fresh

As levels go on, some of them become incredibly hard. Almost impossible. Moves are limited, making it difficult to complete harder levels “buying” extra moves with golden acorns, the in-game currency. And it’s expensive to add 3 additional moves. Especially if players only need one extra move to clear out all obstacles or hit those last few points. It’s unfair in that regard.

There are daily bonuses, but they don’t always give currency. When they do, it’s only enough for one set of extra moves on one level. If you manage to clear a harder level, more than likely you will find yourself waiting till the log-in bonus the next day just to have a solid shot at beating it.

While frustrating at times, this game is still super fun to play. There are constant updates to the game and events going on. Currently, there is an event to get Sobble in the game for a limited  time to join the staff. There are now 150 levels that players can go through, compared to the original 100 the game had at launch. And Nintendo knows that some of the levels are challenging. In the most recent update, they modified some of the harder levels to include more moves or lower the amount of obstacles to overcome.

Charmander ready for work and play in 'Pokemon Cafe Mix'

While this game has originally been frustrating at times, these new updates have been great. It shows that Nintendo is listening to the community and learning how to make each level fun and engaging instead of frustrating. With each update, the game becomes better and more fun to play. For those who want another fun and engaging phone game that constantly gets updates to create a more enjoyable experience, I highly recommend getting Pokémon Café Mix. I will be playing for a long time and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Happy Mixing.
