Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 Soundtrack

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is here and it looks incredible. The amount of hours my younger self sunk into these games is insane. Some of my best gaming memories are sitting on the couch with my cousin and seeing who could get the best score. Tony Hawk’s skateboarding adventures are so woven into video game culture, that a remaster sounds like coming home.

For those unaware, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is a skateboarding game in which each level has a set number of objectives from high scores, collecting secret tapes, to grinding on all of the lunch tables in a given area. Its deceptively easy and extremely fun to pick up and just mess around in. THPS is probably the most fun I’ve had with a “sports” game ever.

The controls are simple. There’s a button for jumping, a button assigned to one style of tricks, like a rail grind, and a button designed for another style, like a board grab. THPS has mastered the simplicity of the control layout to allow anyone to play, but has enough depth to reward those who master the controls.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 may be deceptively simple to play, but mastering it is a true art form. In all honesty, I am terrible at THPS. I get too greedy or I play it too safe. I haven’t been able to walk that fine line, but once players figure out how to master what’s happen4ing, THPS is an absolute joy.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 offers plenty of single player content between the two titles. A new online aspect has been added to the remaster edition. THPS may be a great single player experience, but honestly multiplayer–either online or couch–is where it shines. Playing side by side other players to see who can get the highest score, or see who can cause the worst wipeout.

And we can’t go any further without talking about the soundtrack. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 has one of the best gaming soundtracks on the market. It ruled when it first came out and it still does. I would be lying if I didn’t say that the soundtrack to THPS influenced what I currently listen to. Honestly, what makes the soundtrack so great is the variety it offers. From punk, hip-hop, rap, grunge, and ska, THPS has something for everyone.

Rail grind in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

This game defined a generation and made such an impact in the gaming world that it’s influences can still be felt with modern titles, such as Skate XL. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 may be an arcade take on the sport, but it doesn’t belittle the subject matter. It honors those who gave their likeness for the title, and encouraged so many people to go out there and give it a shot. The updated graphics and engine make skating around an absolute breeze. If I had to say something negative, is that with the single player content, a skill wall exists. But honestly it should.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is something that everyone should try at least once. I think THPS is up there with the likes of Super Smash Bros. or Mario Kart. It has something for the whole family to enjoy, while still offering serious content to hardcore crowd. Do yourself a huge favor and find out why Tony Hawk is the G.O.A.T. and play this game.
