Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker

Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe has had a rough time finding a solid footing with films based on DC Comics properties. Save for hits like Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Aquaman, the other attempts to bring these iconic heroes to the big screen has been a drag on the studio. Maybe what Warner Bros. needs is someone to cheer them up. Enter: Joker. The stand-alone, hard R-rated film from Todd Phillips will explore the origin of Batman’s greatest nemesis, and based on the trailers, this film looks to shake up what we all know about the “Clown Prince of Crime.”

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as “Arthur,” a man trying to fit into a world that he doesn’t understand. He wants to make people laugh — by any means necessary — and if that means using terror to do it, he will. The Joker character has always had a dark side, even before Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance of the character in The Dark Knight made the character a household name.

A little dancing will cheer anyone up

Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Joker today, and audience get a few glimpses into the world that Phillips and Phoenix have created. Could audiences actually feel sorry for the man destined to cause havoc for Batman and the heroes of the DC Universe?

Joker is a stand-alone film, so don’t expect any mentions of Batman, Superman, or any other DC hero. The DC pantheon is made up of multiple universes, or multiverses, so this Joker is from an Earth not yet explored. This gives Todd Phillips the freedom to tell his story without connecting it to any other version of Batman, Gotham, or the character of the Joker himself.

Check out the new trailer below.

Joker will hit theaters on October 4 and is rated R. The film also stars Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron.
