Two pieces of casting news for the upcoming Batman film were dropped today, and while they are still rumors until official, fans are excited by what they are hearing. The Batman, a new take on the popular DC character, has already cast Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and now we know who he will partner with in the Gotham City Police Department, and who he might be fighting when the movie hits theaters in June of 2021.
The Batman casting rumors say that Jeffrey Wright, currently starring in The Goldfinch, but better known for his role in HBO’s Westworld, is in negotiations to play Commissioner James Gordon. Wright is a magnificent actor with decades of roles under his belt. If this rumor pans out, Matt Reeves will have landed an amazing performer to play a major role not just in this film, but in the life of a reportedly younger Batman. The Hollywood Reporter was the fist to break the news of Jeffrey Wright in talks to play Gordon, and already DC fans are abuzz with the news.
What good is a couple of heroes if they don’t have a villain to tussle with? Another The Batman casting rumor says that Jonah Hill is in talks to play an undisclosed bad guy in the new film. Variety was the first to report on Hill’s negotiations, but the role he will play is currently unknown.
Many have suggested that the comedic actor will play a version of The Riddler for Matt Reeves, and others suggest Hill could play Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. Either choice seems bold, but comics fans could see Hill playing The Penguin, due to the actor’s fluctuating body type. That’s not to say he wouldn’t nail The Riddler, as Hill is best known for his comedic work, so its a virtual toss up.
One thing is for sure, and that is The Batman will have a strong actor in the villain role, and heroes are only as good as their villains. With Wright and Hill is deep talks for these two roles, and Pattinson already cast, the new Batman film is already off to a great start.
The Batman is scheduled to go into pre-production soon, so expect more casting news to leak out from Warner Bros. as Matt Reeves gets his project moving forward.
The Batman will be in theaters on June 25, 2021.
