Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman film has already made waves with its unconventional casting. Robert Pattinson has been cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Jeffrey Wright is a lock as Commissioner Gordon. And then there’s that rumor that Jonah Hill will be cast as the villain, and could end up playing The Penguin. Today, Warner Bros. announced that Catwoman has been cast, and Zoe Kravitz will be suiting up to play the feline thief that steals Batman’s heart.
Kravitz is the daughter of rocker Lenny Kravitz and she has carved a name for herself in films like X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road, and in TV shows like HBO’s Big Little Lies. Variety reports that Kravitz is signed on for The Batman, and her inclusion to the already stellar cast has comic book fans excited.
Zoe Kravitz joins a select list of actresses to play Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, on the big screen. This list includes Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises, Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns, and even Halle Berry took a turn in a stand alone film in the early 2000s that was critically and commercially panned.
Lee Meriwether was technically the first actress to play Catwoman on the big screen, as she tussled with Adam West’s Batman in the 1966 film Batman, which was based on the popular ABC TV show at the time. Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt also played Catwoman on the TV series.
The Batman will reportedly feature the caped crusader in his early years of crime fighting in Gotham City, and this new cast is filling out quite nicely with some amazing talent taking on these iconic roles. Matt Reeves was the director of the last two Planet of the Apes films for Fox, and comes with enough geek cred to make sure this version of Batman stays true to the character and the DC Comics world around him.
The Batman will go into production later this year and will hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
