In what was the first real threat to Avengers: Endgame‘s box office dominance, Pokemon Detective Pikachu fell just short of Marvel’s mightiest. Avengers picked up another $63 million to take first place this weekend, and Warner Bros.’ Detective Pikachu rolled into second with $58 million. When box office actuals are released on Monday, these numbers might prove to be closer, but we don’t expect the two films to swap places.
Pokemon Detective Pikachu is based on the Nintendo video games, and the $58 million opening is the best opening ever for a film based on a video game. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie, held the previous record for a video game adaption, as it opened with $47 million in 2001.
In third place was the new Rebel Wilson-Anne Hathaway film, The Hustle. The female-led comedy pulled in $13.5 million over Mother’s Day weekend. The Hustle is a soft remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and has received fair reviews from fans, but not with critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
The top five weekend box office results for May 10-12 is rounded out with the Dennis Quaid thriller, The Intruder, in fourth place with $6.6 million, bringing its lifetime total to $20.9 million, and the Seth Rogen-Charlize Theron comedy, Long Shot, which scored another $6.1 million to bring its two week total to $19.7 million.
Two other new films placed in the top 10. POMS, starring Diane Keaton and Jacki Weaver as older women who start a “veteran” cheerleading team, came in sixth with $5.1 million, and Tolkien, starring Nicholas Hoult as the famed fantasy author and professor J.R.R. Tolkien, made $2.1 million, which was good enough for ninth place.

The other studios continue to chip away at Disney’s Avengers juggernaut, as next week, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, opens and is expected to finally be the film that knocks Captain America and his team off the top spot. And if John Wick can’t do it, Aladdin or Godzilla surely will. Now that’s a team up we’d love to see.
Check back with us next week the updated box office results.
