Superhero PoP!s are always being made. Just this year alone we have seen a new wave of Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, just to list off the larger super powered movies that have come out in the last few months. That doesn’t include all of the DC Bombshell series, the Batman: The Animated Series, or the Batman ’66 show set. There’s a lot to choose from for fans of the genre. Now we have even more with the release of the Justice League movie Funko PoP! vinyl.
As with the previously mentioned sets, these new figures were released in response to the new Justice League movie coming in November, and there doesn’t seem to have been a lot of thought put into the overall design. I mean, I thought Batman was Catwoman at first when I saw the top of the box. Those goggles! Not the best design option if I thought it was another character. Not Funko’s fault, so maybe it will make more sense when we see the movie?
But with this new set, we do get to see some nice designs for a couple lesser known characters, like Cyborg and Aquaman. Those characters haven’t had that many Funko PoP!s produced of them, and the designs are decent. They both offer detailed molds and nice little touches. As for the rest of the characters, such as Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman, they look quickly designed and pushed out just to get them released before the movie. Superman’s head seems lopsided on his hunched over figure that is punching the ground. Didn’t see him in the trailer? Maybe its a spoiler? Time will tell.
Flash has way too many abs that show through his suit and doesn’t look much different from other figures I have seen of him. Wonder Woman looks like a reproduced figure of the movie Wonder Woman series that came out in April before her solo movie. Just not interesting enough changes to feel any different.
Overall, if you are a DC Comics fan, such as myself, but you are wondering if you should get the PoP!s now or wait, I would wait and see if you enjoy the movie. They look the same as other figures of these characters in the past and it would be a waste of money to go out and buy this new line unless you are a superfan. The only ones I was impressed with would be Cyborg and Aquaman, because the only other Cyborg molds are from the cartoon show, Teen Titans Go! and his old-school 1980’s look, this one is much more detailed and pretty cool! Aquaman is more rugged and ridged than the previous blonde haired retro comic book mold from the previous series. Other than those two, I would save your money for another set of Funko PoP! that has more effort put into them.
This article is based on the writer’s observations after their own purchase of these Funko PoP! figures.
