Companies always seem to tie release dates together and without missing a beat, Bungie and Funko teamed up to produce a line of Destiny PoP! figures. The standard set includes the likes of Cayde-6, Lord Shaxx, Ikora, Zavala, and Oryx, but the set has three exclusives. Gamestop gets Xur and Atheon, and Target gets Crota, God of the Hive and son of Oryx.
I am a massive Destiny nerd. I completely devoured the first one and I am so excited to be able to sink my teeth into the second one. So, when I heard Destiny was getting a line of PoP! figures I was stoked, until I saw the full line-up. Yes, the full Vaguard should be there. Ikora, Zalvala, and Cayde-6 are integral to the Destiny story. Lord Shaxx is such a great character and he runs the PvP for players, so of course he should have been there.
Where I get a little hesitant is Atheon and the design for Xur. Atheon is the last boss I would have made a PoP! for. His only claim to fame is that he is the first boss players bested in Destiny, but story wise, he isn’t anything special. I would have sooner seen a PoP! for Varkis, from the House of Wolves expansion. It would have added another alien type to the line-up, and given respect to a loved/hated Destiny character.
The design for Xur looks plain and awkward. Granted, it must have been hard trying to design the face tentacles the character has, but the way Funko went about it looks awkward. It takes away the joy players have in seeing him in game and turns him into a small joke.
The standard line-up with the Vanguard, Lord Shaxx, and Oryx are perfect for any fan of Destiny, but for the hard-core collector, I would suggest going after just Oryx and the Target exclusive glow-in-the-dark Crota. Sadly, this line-up feels too much like a cash grab and rushed than a nod to a great franchise.
