The first Friday of September has come and gone, and Funko launched their new line of Star Wars PoP!s for the new movie coming out this December, The Last Jedi. And to be fair, some of the PoP!s launched were pretty awesome. But other seem to be cash grabs, as many PoP!s in the Star Wars line seem to be, with only slight variants and a new logo on the box being the main difference in designs.
There were a decent chunk PoP!s that I thought were awesome in this series. The first was Finn, who is seen in a First Order outfit, raising questions on what he is doing in that outfit. Is he an undercover spy? Or has he reverted to his origins to save the people of the rebellion he loves, like Poe and Rey? Lots of questions, lots of wait time to figure out the answer.
Then there is Porg, who is freaking adorable. Have you seen this weird creature?! He looks like a fluffy penguin with dog coloring and huge eyes who squawks in the most adorable way. The Chase variant of this PoP! has the creature with his mouth open. Whichever one you find in the wild will be great as this little guy is freaking adorable and I want all of the little fluffy penguin creatures.
Next up is a PoP! of Chewbacca holding Porg, here you get to see a size comparison of how large Chewbacca is and how small and adorable the Porg is. I can’t get enough of them. Lord Snoke makes his second appearance in this line of PoP! figures, but this time he has skin color and colored robe, so we get to see him as an actual character, instead of the hologram version that has been previously available.
Finally, there is Rey, who is wearing her new outfit that we have seen in the trailers with her hair down and with a lightsaber. Go kick butt girl! Beyond those five PoP! figures, the rest of the series seem like a cash grab. Luke Skywalker looks the same as his PoP! from The Force Awakens but this time he has a cane. BB-8 is back, and this time he has a little dongle sticking out of his side. Woo. There’s also an evil robot, BB-9E. Must there really be evil robots? Do you all remember last year when Rogue One came out and there was a random PoP! of a robot that you never saw in the movie? Yeah, I feel like this is going to be the same thing.
Kylo Ren has his wobbly lightsaber in this figure and no mask, so there is some slight intimidation, and then Poe is in street clothes, making him look like Cassian from Rogue One and making me do a double take to make sure it wasn’t. And I almost forgot about the Stormtrooper Executioner, because it’s a Stormtrooper. That’s it. That’s probably why I almost forgot about him. There’s nothing exciting about this PoP! and he is the most blatant cash grab. There needs to be a Stormtrooper in each series that they launch apparently, or it’s not a proper Star Wars series.
If you are a Star Wars fan, I would be selective about which PoP!s you get. They aren’t all great. But if you just collect PoPs to collect them, have at it. I would just suggest a few of this line of PoP!s to add the most variance into your collection, and to not waste your money on unnecessary purchases. That said, there is always the Star Wars uber fan who will buy them all!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi PoP! figures are available now. This review is based on Funko PoP! purchased by the writer.
