Netflix released the new trailer for Black Mirror Season 5, and the premiere date, the latter of which is much closer than you think. Black Mirror is set to drop on the streaming service on June 5, which is less than a month away.
Black Mirror Season 5 marks the first new content on the award-winning series since last winter’s choose your own adventure episode-slash-feature film, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Season 4 of Black Mirror wrapped up its six episode run at the very end of 2017. It was that season that led off with the award-winning “USS Callister” episode, which featured a Star Trek-like TV show with the usual Black Mirror technology twists.
Sadly, Black Mirror Season 5 appears to be only three episodes, but it will feature the star power of Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Endgame) and Miley Cyrus. The episodes will once again tell twisted stories that center on our reliance on technology and how that can easily go awry. This is the basis of the series, as each story has had some component of technology as the focal point, whether it was the life crushing power of social media influence, as in the Bryce Dallas Howard episode “Nosedive,” or even the ability to live and love forever, as the case in Season 3’s masterpiece, “San Junipero.”
Black Mirror is the creation of Charlie Brooker and began its run in England on Channel 4 before Netflix picked it up. Since then, the series has become an international hit, with actors and actresses from both sides of the pond appearing in episodes.
While we are a little sad that Black Mirror Season 5 is only three episodes, hopefully, there won’t be 18 months between seasons proper and more episodes will be coming sooner rather than later. There is precedent for a new season to drop just after Christmas, so these three episodes could just be a taste of more to come this winter. That’s our hope anyway. Check out the new trailer below.
