The theatrical remake of Frank Herbert’s Dune is currently filming, under the amazing eye of director Denis Villeneuve. Now, Warner Bros. has announced today that a Dune TV series will be coming to the WarnerMedia streaming service, and it too will be spearheaded by the French Canadian filmmaker.
Dune: The Sisterhood is being developed to coincide with the release of the Dune remake in November of 2020. The series will be exclusive to the WarnerMedia streaming service, which will launch this fall. The show will focus on the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, a group of powerful women who secretly control universal policy from behind the scenes.
The show was first announced by Variety, who describes the plot as follows.
Set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s epic Dune novel series, Dune: The Sisterhood is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.”
Villeneuve is no stranger to taking on iconic classic stories and making them his own. His Blade Runner 2049 revisited the legendary Ridley Scott sci-fi film world with a sequel that in many ways exceeded the first film. He also directed Prisoners, Sicario, and The Arrival, and is one of the best filmmakers working today. Villenueve will direct the pilot episode of the new series based on Frank Herbert’s celebrated universe.
Dune: The Sisterhood is being developed at Legendary Television, and Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, is serving as Executive Producer. Warner Bros. previously announced that the Dune remake would be one part of a multi-media, multi-platform relaunch, and fans of the Dune novels are excited to this world — and universe — brought to life for a new generation.
WarnerMedia launches this fall, and Dune: The Sisterhood is the third exclusive show announced for the platform. Stay tuned for additional information on both the new series and WarnerMedia’s upcoming launch.
