Netflix dropped a new trailer for their upcoming original series, The Witcher. The series is based off the best-selling fantasy book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, and the popular video game franchise by CD Projekt Red. Longtime fans were worried that Netflix would fail to capture the soul of the The Witcher’s world, but this first The Witcher trailer puts all those fears to rest.
The Witcher is the story of Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a member of a guild of monster hunters — called Witchers, naturally — tasked with slaying beasts across the world for gold. Witchers are trained from youth to be hunters and they go through a transformation that enhances their abilities to track and kill the creatures. Geralt finds himself stuck in the middle of a war between kingdoms, and is tasked with protecting a young girl, Ciri (Freya Allan), who might be the key to ending the conflict.
The Witcher trailer hits all the right notes, introducing Geralt, Ciri, and Yennifer (Anya Chalotra), the three main leads of the series. Through snippets of monologue, the overall story is hinted at, and Netflix’s The Witcher series looks, sounds, and feels like the perfect replacement for the now-completed Game of Thrones. Expect lots of betrayals, blood, deaths, and gore — and monsters, lots and lots of monsters.
One aspect at play in this trailer is not only the introductions of the characters, but the overall history of this world. Those fans who have read the books or played the games or both are well aware that this is a land lousy with war and conflict, and it looks like the series will capture that too.
