In honor of the San Diego Comic-Con, HBO dropped a new trailer for the upcoming series based on DC Comics‘ Watchmen. This is the second dedicated Watchmen trailer for the series, which will premiere this fall on the premium network. The first raised a ton of questions from long-time fans, and this second trailer only adds more to the mystery.
One thing that is made clear in this new trailer is that this is a world after the events of the popular comic book series, and not a long-form retelling of the original Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons story. Zack Snyder has already tackled that in a Watchmen film from 2009. What isn’t immediately clear is if this story serves a sequel to Snyder’s film, or to the comic book itself.
The new Watchmen trailer features a world that has moved on from the horrors inflicted on it by Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons). Superheroes are outlawed, and the police run what looks to be a martial law state. What better time for Doctor Manhattan to return from Mars to make things right — or cause even more chaos.
Regardless of where this story goes, HBO’s Watchmen is in good hands with Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers) executive producing and developing. And the cast is stocked from top to bottom with amazing actors, including Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett, Jr., Regina King, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jean Smart, among others.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are even onboard to score the series. This is a lot of creative firepower, and airing on HBO, Watchmen will have every opportunity to shine.
